Intramural program brings back competitive edge

Are you already feeling washed-up and missing the glory days of high school gym class? Look no further: Utah’s intramural program can bring those memories back to you.
The U offers many different ways to become involved on campus, and one of these is intramural sports. The intramural program is one of the best ways to get involved because it gives students the opportunity to meet fellow classmates while also enjoying fun activities.
There are all kinds of sports that are offered through this program. Some examples are team sports, such as flag football and basketball, but the program also offers more individual-friendly sports like racquetball or table tennis.
These activities are open to all students at the U, including incoming freshmen or transfer students. The benefit of intramurals is students can sign up for either a casual or competitive league, depending on what suits them.
The program gives you the choice of signing up with a team or signing up individually as a “free agent.” If you sign up alone, you will be assigned a team to play with. So whether you have a group of friends to make a team or not, everybody has the opportunity to play.
Dusty Argyle, a student in computer engineering, recently played flag football intramurals. He said his experience with intramurals allowed him to meet people that he wouldn’t have normally met otherwise. Signing up for intramurals is easy, and it can be done by visiting campusrec.utah.edu. The cost to register for a sport is only $7.
Boz Echivarre, lead supervisor for the intramural program, said the minimal cost is one of the best things about intramurals.
“It’s the cheapest rec league you’ll find anywhere,” Echivarre said.
Echivarre also mentioned that playing sports has allowed him to create new connections around campus.
“Especially being an out-of-state student, it is a great way to make friends,” he said.
School is a top priority for most students, and intramurals make student involvement easy. The games are typically played once or twice a week on specific days assigned by the league. They are not played on the weekends unless it is a special event. This allows students to count on a consistent time, which prevents the need to worry about games conflicting with class schedules or other commitments.
Participating in intramurals is fun, and it provides students with a great opportunity to stay physically and mentally healthy. Keeping off the dreaded “freshman 15” is easier said than done, but intramural sports help keep your body in tip-top shape so you can look good and feel good. So grab that headband and those tight shorts and sign up for intramurals today.
