Finding Balance in Biking

Mountain biking in the Wasatch Front is one of the most exhilarating activities you can do in Utah.

The trails around Salt Lake City offer a plethora of different scenery ranging from majestic mountain tops to swift turning trails. If you have the guts and determination, there are even some insane trails with jumps and other obstacles.

A few of the most popular trails mountain bikers ride are Millcreek Canyon, Dog Lake, Desolation Lake, and Mueller Park Canyon.

Mountain biking is a great way to get fit because it offers a good balance. You have to work hard on inclines, but if you want to relax and take a break, you can coast or ride downhill. Believe me, when you’re done, your legs will thank you for the workout.

Biking is also a strong upper-body exercise. The continual impact on your hands and arms from the handle bars will result in muscle building.

On any bike excursion, you’ll need to pack plenty of snacks and energy food for your adventurous appetite. Bringing water is also a must — that is what your body will need most during grueling rides. Some other essential gear includes: a helmet, spare tubes, a patch kit, CO2 cartridges for inflating tires, tire levers, and biking gloves.

For more experienced mountain bikers, try bindings that allow your shoes to attach to the pedals. This allows for a complete revolution of power from your legs to the rear tire, ensuring more energy will be burned. This also helps with maneuverability. The turns you take will be tighter, and you’ll lose less speed on your climbs.

One common experience for mountain bikers is falling. You’ll gain some gnarly scratches on your arms and legs, but it’s just a sign of experience and adventure. Don’t let a nasty fall keep you from riding. Just get back up and hang in there.

The most important thing you can do while mountain biking is to go with a buddy. Having company ensures that someone will be there for you in the event of an accident. And mountain biking is always more fun when you have others with you.

Once you get the hang of mountain biking, your legs will be spinning and your heart urging for more adventure — and it’s out there.
