New Music Monday: ASAP Rocky

Most people have probably heard at least one or two songs from rap artist ASAP Rocky off his successful first studio album, “Live. Love. ASAP.” On May 26 he released his second studio album entitled “AT.LONG.LAST.,” which showcases some of his new style elements along with a little dash of familiarity.

The album features songs with collaborations from many big names in hip hop such as Schoolboy Q, Kanye West, Juicy J, Mos Def, Lil Wayne and others. The songs cover topics from love to sex to life on the streets with thoughtful, interesting lyrics and beats.

The ASAP we know and love is evident in his silky vocals and smooth lyrics but his new style is more edgy and on the experimental side. This new style is most obvious in his song, “L$D”, which utilizes sound effects and distortion to achieve a trippy, whimsical sound. The album is a good one to listen to all the way through as it flows like a well put together story. Some other standouts are “Fine Whine” (featuring Future, Joe Fox and MIA), “Excuse Me,” “Jukebox Joints” (featuring Joe Fox and Kanye West) and “Everyday” (featuring Rod Stewart, Miguel and Mark Ronson).

Whether you are an ASAP fan or have yet to give him a listen, “AT.LONG.LAST.” is definitely worth at least one listen-through. It might take a few songs to get a feel for the new style, but it will have you going back for more.
