Making Life an Adventure, in London or Elsewhere

Making Life an Adventure, in London or Elsewhere

I want to tell you about the fun I’ve been having in London. I want to describe stories of travelling to Bath, Brighton and Wales. I want to give you a piece of the magic I witnessed as I watched my favorite musical, Wicked, on stage and what I felt when I walked through the Tower of London. I can’t. Partly because this is something you really need to experience yourself, but mostly because while all these experiences have been truly amazing, they aren’t the real reason I came to London.

I came here to see if working at a book publishing agency was something I would want to do in the future. I came because I wanted to gain real-life work experience while living in a city of culture and opportunity. Proudly, yet humbly, I think it’s safe to say I’m accomplishing that goal.

At 7:30 a.m., I wake up and prepare myself for the day. I take a shower, get dressed, eat breakfast, then jump on my bus headed to work. Regularly, when I get there, it’s only me and the office manager, so we have a chat about what’s going on in our lives and how we’re doing. Then, as everyone else starts to file into the office, the work really begins (honestly though, it never ends). Something is constantly happening, and I never find that I have nothing to do.

The work day ends, and I come home exhausted, already prepared to go to sleep. Then there’s reading to do for my job, there are seminars I have to attend for my program and there’s scheduling time to eat. It’s hard, sometimes, being in London and realizing that the majority of my time spent here is working. I don’t regret it, though. Luckily, I thoroughly enjoy my job. Already, I’m looking towards the future, thinking about how I’m going to take this publishing dream of mine further.

Although doing the touristy things in London has been a blast, I didn’t want to talk all about that. I wanted to share my work experience and explain how important it is to seek out job opportunities. I believe that everything we do is a learning experience. There’s something you can take out of everything. Something that I will definitely take away from this experience is how much energy it takes to work yet still have a social life and still do the things you love to do. It gave me a whole new perspective on being an adult and juggling the happenings in everyday life.

I can’t really do justice to all the things that I’ve experienced while in London. I can, however, urge you to make your own adventure. That adventure still may be in the States; it could very well be in Salt Lake City, Utah. But don’t sell yourself short. Don’t think you don’t have the time, the money or the energy to chase after your dreams. Because though it may be tacky to say, your life really is what you make of it, so go out and live your own London adventure — even if it’s not in London.
