School of Business Celebrates “Eccles Week” to Commemorate Namesake

The David Eccles School of Business celebrated “Eccles Week” in honor of its namesake.

The commemoration, held Monday through Thursday last week, Sept. 14 to Sept. 18 recognized a different value each day. On Monday, the school looked back on David Eccles’ legacy with a photo display; by the end of his life, he had started more than 54 businesses. Tuesday touted leadership with a speech by Norm Wesley, former CEO of Fortune Brands.

The School of Business planned to have a rock wall for climbing on Wednesday, but the event was rained out. The keynote speaker that night, Tracy Christman, partner at Ernst and Young, still presented on what it means to have a voice.

The school of business capped off Eccles Week by giving students a turn to speak on Thursday’s theme: excellence. In the Spencer Fox Eccles Business Building, large posters were hung on the wall where students could write what excellence means to them.

“I think it’s important for business students to learn about and pay respect to our heritage,” said Justin Glaitlli, a junior in the School of Business. “It’s definitely beneficial to practice the values presented.”

Pete Codella, director of marketing and communication at the School of Business, said motivating students was one of the goals of the events.

“The activities this week were meant to instill these values in students,” he said. “The values that David Eccles exemplified led him to achieve things that we hope our students will achieve.”
