New Music Monday: Fetty Wap

Many people are familiar with Fetty Wap from his wildly popular single released earlier this year, “Trap Queen.” However, Fetty Wap has definitively proved that he is far from a one hit wonder with the release of his debut album, “Fetty Wap,” on Sept. 25. Over the past few months, Fetty Wap has been heard collaborating with big name rappers. He has also released a couple popular singles, “679” and “Come My Way (Feat. Drake),” to follow up “Trap Queen.” These singles were impressively popular, landing in the top 11 of Billboard’s Hot 100.

All of these hits appear on the new album, however, they do not overshadow the rest of the tracks. Wap gives listeners an extensive 20-song album that showcases his unique vocal style and range. None of the songs on the album blend into the background and they all feel as if they could stand alone as solid singles.

Though the songs could stand alone, the album does not come off as disjointed. The songs are unified by Wap’s catchy range, from seductively low one minute to energetically high the next. The album is surprisingly romantic, with multiple songs featuring Wap crooning about a woman he can’t seem to get off his mind. “Again” is one of these songs and strategically disperses lyrics sampled from “Trap Queen” throughout the track. This romantic theme also serves to unite the album.

If you only know Wap from extensive radio play of his hit singles, then give his new album a listen. You may just leave “Trap Queen” behind and find a new favorite Fetty Wap song…or 19.
