New Music Monday: Justin Bieber’s Latest Album Might Leave His Bad Reputation Behind

When people think of Justin Bieber they may only remember his mistakes. It’s true: Bieber has made some poor decisions and produced some poor musical numbers over the course of his career. However, with the release of his album “Purpose” on Nov. 13, Bieber proves he has what it takes to leave his bad reputation behind.

“Purpose” is the first album released by Bieber since his album “Believe” debuted in 2012. Over the past three years, his sound has matured into something smoother and more listenable. His collaborations with big-name artists like Big Sean, Nas, Halsey and Skrillex show he has gained respect and trust in the music scene.

The album cover photo itself is a testament to the changes Bieber has made. It is a dramatic black and white photo highlighting his collection of tattoos, especially the cross on his chest. It is a far cry from his previous “pretty boy” look that is plastered in the public’s mind.

In songs like “Life is Worth Living,” Bieber alludes to leaving his old persona in the past and living life in a more purposeful way.

He also talks of his personal growth in his song “No Pressure” (Ft. Big Sean). Big Sean’s lines bring some much needed texture to what would otherwise come across as another flat ballad. Bieber is digging a bit deeper in his songs than he has in the past.

Though there is not an incredible amount of soul present in the album, at least he is searching. The beginning of the album comes off slightly flat, but by the middle he starts bringing it in and building it up. This is evident in the songs “Love Yourself,” “The Feeling” (ft. Halsey) and “No Sense” (ft. Travi$ Scott).

He is also staying true to his Pop and Electronic Dance Music style with the song “Children” that sounds a bit like an early 2000s Dance Dance Revolution number. It is a spacey and highly dance-able number.

The overall feeling on the album is of Bieber finding some resolution for himself on what has been a tumultuous journey. He takes some risks in his style that pay off in a surprisingly palatable album. He still has a long way to go, but “Purpose” may be just what Bieber needs to start a new chapter in his career.
