Tunes Tuesday: New Album “Khalifa” Is The Same Old Wiz

There is comfort in the familiar, and Wiz Khalifa’s latest album, “Khalifa,” is about as familiar as you can get.

The album, released Feb. 5, comes not long after Khalifa’s recent stint in prison and is his first since “Blacc Hollywood” in 2014.

The slammer seemed to do nothing to deter Khalifa’s creative drive, nor did it drastically change his style and subject matter. However, the song “Celebrate (Ft. Rico Love)” mentions his gratitude that he is not in prison and is instead out enjoying life.

Though many of Khalifa’s songs revolve around things like sex, drugs, alcohol and circle back to drugs, the lyrics are catchy. “Lit (Ft. Ty Dolla $ign)” is an ode to Khalifa’s favorite leisure activity.

Some of the lyrics even delve into deeper topics, such as change and the concept of home (not without the requisite mention of drugs, however). These ideas come through in “Zoney,” featuring Khalifa’s son, Sebastian.

Khalifa also shows his soft side in “Call Waiting” where he croons about a woman he can’t get off his mind.

If you know Khalifa primarily for his hit song “Black and Yellow,” you will find yourself right at home with this album, especially when his signature, raspy laugh punctuates his rapping.

The single “Bake Sale (Ft. Travis Scott),” released in 2015, is the lead single off the album.

“Khalifa” is a good album to put on in the background at your next house party. Though nothing is very original, if you are a Khalifa fan, this album will be exactly what you are used to.
