Benefits of the Student Life Center

The Student Life Center on campus at the University of Utah is where students can excercise and rent outdoor equipment for various adventures on Wednesday, July 20, 2016

The Student Life Center is an asset some students do not take advantage of, or even know about. It is located just west of the George S. Eccles 2002 Legacy Bridge and adjacent to the Fort Douglas TRAX stop. The Student Life Center was built Jan. 11, 2015 for members of the U community.

One of the great advantages of this facility is that it is free for all students taking credit hours. For staff, retirees, alumni and anyone associated with the U they provide a discounted price; cheaper than all gyms in the Salt Lake valley. For example, a student’s significant other would only pay $58.77 (including tax) for a whole semester. And only $6 for a day pass.

The Student Life Center has a lot to offer people who take advantage of it. When asked what some students thought this facility had to offer them, most simply said weights, machines and a pool. However, there are a number of options for those associated with the U to try out. There is an indoor/outdoor pool, as well as indoor/outdoor tracks, lifeguard training, swim lessons, a full gym with weights and machines, fitness classes, personal trainers, combative room, racquetball courts, sports clubs, summit climbing wall and bouldering, massage therapy, outdoor fire pit, free locker rentals, Freshen’s Cafe and a University Federal Credit Union. The amount of opportunities to better yourself are endless.

The few downsides of the center are if you forget your student ID they will not let you in, and they cannot look up a person to verify who they are. The lockers are also very limited. The only way to get one is if you come to the facility on the first day of the semester and stand in a very long line. The gym can also get very busy at peak hours, and weight/cardio machines are limited.

Overall, the Student Life Center is there to help students accomplish their fitness goals. Their objective is to bring the students and community together. A very important aspect is that students of all fitness levels are welcomed, and are in a safe-zone to achieve their goals. The Student Life Center is a positive part of the U school.
