Letter from the President

Letter+from+the+President

Students,

It is great to see the campus alive with the energy of a new academic year. I want to welcome everyone to the University of Utah.

Those of you who are new to our campus will find that the U is an inclusive environment, and I look forward to seeing what your unique personalities, talents, and visions will add to our campus learning experience. I encourage each of you to immerse yourselves in all that the U has to offer.

The University of Utah is a tier-one research university. That means that you will be learning from world-class faculty members who are not only transferring knowledge, but also creating knowledge. They are enthusiastic about sharing their expertise and discoveries with all of you. Make the most of your academic opportunities by engaging with them. Take advantage of the many programs that allow you to become a part of pathbreaking research. You will find that regardless of your interests, there is something for you here at the U. Your academic ambitions will find support, this is a place where you can, as we like to say, imagine and do.

When I became president, I promised that we would provide each student with at least one deeply engaging activity. You choose the activity that’s right for you. It might be in athletics, arts, student government, or learning abroad at our new campus in South Korea. Perhaps you’ll identify a new gene, create a business, develop an app, design a product at the new Lassonde Studios, or volunteer with the Bennion Community Service Center. For more ideas, visit the MUSE Project at muse.utah.edu. There are hundreds of ways to get involved. Your successful completion of coursework is important, of course, but some of the most memorable and meaningful experiences you have at the U will occur outside the classroom.

Find balance. Take a swim or climb a rock wall in the George S. Eccles Student Life Center; hike or bike to enjoy the beauty that surrounds the university; cheer on our teams at a sporting event; treat yourself to a play, concert, or dance performance; expand your intellectual horizons with a lecture; or explore new experiences through a wide range of student activities. Be part of the fabric of the University of Utah community.

I am confident this will be a great year. You have earned your place at Utah’s flagship institution. You join notable and distinguished alumni. Each of you fills me with optimism for the future of not only this university, but the greater community as well.

Best wishes in your endeavors,

David W. Pershing
