PlazaFest: A Way For Students To Get Involved

It’s the busiest time of year again. Students are moving into dorms, picking up textbooks at the bookstore, and searching relentlessly for classrooms on campus; it’s the start of a new fall semester. For those wondering how they can meet people and get involved, the answer is PlazaFest.

On August 24, hundreds of clubs and student organizations will come together on campus to get students excited about getting involved at the U. Students can explore different tables and booths, get swag, learn about the various organizations, and even sign up for clubs that interest them.

“It’s a great opportunity to meet lots of different students and organizations. You are meeting people outside of what you’ve seen and known [on campus], and meeting people with similar interests,” said Devon Reoch, Staff Director for the CRU club.

The CRU club is a Protestant-Christian student organization on campus, and one of the many clubs that will be at PlazaFest. There are clubs for many types of interests, including engineering, the arts and sports. One Love Ski and Snowboard will have a table, as well as the Muslim Student Association, to name a few.

What many freshman will learn throughout the semester is that there is more to campus life than just attending classes and hiding out in the library studying. There are countless opportunities to network with people and build relationships while at the U. By joining a club or two, students can discover what they are passionate about, whether it relates to their major or is just something that is interesting and fun to them.

“[PlazaFest] is a way to explore different interests and meet different types of people. You feel busy and overwhelmed the first week… You probably will only get busier as time goes, but take the jump and sign up for a couple different clubs and commit to them, then see after a semester if it’s been good for you,” said Reoch.

Why should students go to PlazaFest? The college experience only happens once, and PlazaFest gives incoming freshman the opportunity to be a part of something while they attend the U (not to mention all the free stuff they can get from the hundreds of student organizations scattered throughout campus this Wednesday).

PlazaFest begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m. near the Union building. PlazaFest takes place twice a year, both in the fall and spring, so if students are unable to participate this fall, there will be an opportunity spring semester to learn more about and join the clubs on campus.
