Soccer: Rogers shines on Senior Day

Soccer%3A+Rogers+shines+on+Senior+Day

Summary:

On Sunday, Oct. 30, Utah soccer took on UCLA at Ute Field. Early on in the game, senior Katie Rogers got a shot on goal and sunk the ball into the net, giving her team a 1-0 lead over the Bruins. But sophomore Hailey Skolmoski secured her team’s chances of winning the game when she scored in the 88th minute, finishing the game 2-0.

Standout player:

Even though she scored the first goal of the game against UCLA, Rogers said it was a hard day, but it was still awesome. After a corner kick from freshman Natalee Wells in the 19th minute, Rogers headed the ball into the net, notching the eighth goal of her college career.

Because it was Senior Day during the game, Rogers realized that it is getting close to the end for her. She couldn’t help but mention how amazing she thinks her team is. When Skolmoski got the last goal, Rogers couldn’t ask for anything better.

Improvements:

Head coach Rich Manning said that this week leading up to the team’s next game against Colorado on Friday, Nov. 4, the key to taking the win is preparation. Since the team will be playing another good team on the road, Manning added that there is a lot at stake with this next game.

For Roger, all her team needs to work on this week is its refocus for the last game of the season. If the Utes can accomplish that, then Rogers believes her team can get the win this Friday and secure a spot in the Pac-12 tournament.

Coach’s corner:

“We put in a very good performance. I thought we played very well. We solved some of the challenges that are usually present, and then we created a lot of really good opportunities to put a couple of them away so overall, it was a fantastic performance.” — Manning said.
