Are you excited about the holiday season?  This time of year brings together some great traditions most of us enjoy each and every year.

There are so many movies catered toward the particular holiday season of Christmas that the options seem endless. But sometimes there are those classic Christmas movies you watch every single time during this year that you never get sick of.

Which of those films should you watch with your relatives, friends or on your own? Here are a few classic movie suggestions you can watch in these circumstances that will also get you in the holiday spirit, whether or not you’ve already seen them a million times.

With Your Family

“Home Alone” (1990)

Most of us were raised watching this movie every Christmas season, so you may know the plot by heart. But those of you who don’t might want to check it out because it will likely end up joining your list of favorite holiday movies. Here’s a quick synopsis of the movie: a child gets left at home on accident when his large family hurries to the airport for a holiday trip, not noticing his absence until they land. While they try to figure out how to get back home, a few burglars try stealing from their house where the 8-year-old is left behind – but in a fun twist he ends up successfully warding them off with all sorts of funny tactics. Your whole family from young to old may have watched this multiple times, but I guarantee that most will be willing to watch it again for a good laugh.

“How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (2000)

This long-lived story from Dr. Seuss, adapted into a few different movie versions, remains a Christmas-themed original. It’s hard to resist watching the newest version where the angry old Grinch is played by famously funny actor Jim Carrey. As the Grinch story comes to life, you’ll feel a sense of happiness as he grows his heart and learns the true meaning of Christmas: love. You’ll also laugh a little at how bizarre the Grinch’s character is, as well as at his mischievous attempts to steal everything Christmas-related from the Whos. Your family might end up singing the songs from this film, as some are quite different from the holiday songs we often hear, but are catchy just the same. You could make and decorate Christmas cookies with the kids in the family if you have a bit of a sweet tooth during the show as well.

With Your Friends

“Elf” (2003)

Who doesn’t love a classic Christmas comedy? Have you ever met anyone who hasn’t fallen in love with this Christmas movie? It’s doubtful you have, since it’s such a hilarious film. Popular comedian Will Ferrell stars in this one, where he plays a character who believes he is an actual elf from the North Pole and travels to New York to find his real dad. He is somewhat oblivious at first to the harshness of New York, but even as he begins to learn, he manages to maintain a child-like innocence while falling for a girl who works at a Christmas store, played by Zoe Deschanel from the show “New Girl.” Snuggle up in your pajamas with your friends to watch this one.

“Love Actually” (2003)

This movie may be more popular in the UK than here, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a classic. If you and your friends want to watch a drama and romance-filled Christmas movie, this one’s a good choice. Intertwining stories play out in this film, as multiple relationships end up for the best during the holidays. A few huge Hollywood actors were cast in this film, which have added to its success as they play incredible roles. Cry, laugh and chat a little with your friends as you view “Love Actually.”

On Your Own

“The Holiday” (2006)

Have some relaxing time to yourself for once? Snack on some festive treats as you watch “The Holiday.” Not only are the actors superb in this film, but the storyline is sweet. Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law and Jack Black play the major roles in this classic, and that’s only naming a few of the cast members. This movie is quite romantic as the characters played by Winslet and Diaz switch homes on different sides of the Atlantic during the holidays, then both end up finding love. Winslet meets an old Hollywood director who gives her words of much needed advice, while she becomes his supportive friend. Enjoy this film next to your Christmas tree to feel more festive.

Whatever movie you choose, remember to pair it with a warm blanket and a cup of hot cocoa for a truly festive holiday season.
