Showcasing student choreography and run entirely by students, the Modern Dance Program’s upcoming concert at the School of Dance will premiere this weekend.

This unique production is produced entirely by students. “From audition, setting up space, lighting, program information, to running the show, the five of us do everything,” said Nicholas Daulton, a student performer and contributor in the performance.“My favorite aspect of this show is that it’s the only venue for student choreographers to showcase their work within the university.”

Daulton, Micah Burkhardt, Rachel Luebbert, Allie Kamppinen and Celeste Reed are the collaborators, performers and directors of the production which are showcasing exclusive and student-based works.

This show will be a mixture of contemporary modern dance, jazz and screen dances.  “Each [dance] is unique to the voice of the choreographer/creator,” said Daulton.

Additionally, the concert will also feature other works of art from students across the college of fine arts.

The modern dance concert will feature original work and should serve as a wonderful way to introduce yourself to the arts or continue enjoying an art form you are already familiar with. “Watch the movement, spatial configurations, and physical effort exuded from the dancers.  If you really want to know what the piece meant, ask the choreographer or make your own meaning,” said Daulton.

The Modern Student Dance Concert will be held Feb. 16 at 5:30 p.m., Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m., and Feb. 18 at 2 and 7:30 p.m. in the Marriott Center for Dance’s Studio 240. Admission is free with your U-card.

“Students should attend because dance is the most ephemeral of the art forms. Some dances aren’t ever performed again after their initial showings,” said Daulton.
