University of Utah’s School of Music’s Wind Ensemble will make history April 3, 2018, as they perform the world premiere of David Maslanka’s “Symphony No. 10.”

Occurring in the Libby Gardner Concert Hall, the concert features music by renowned musician, David Maslanka. A prominent composer of wind band repertoire, Maslanka is well known for his emotionally engaging compositions. “Symphony No. 10,” however, is his last piece, as Maslanka passed away last August after beginning work on the piece.

His son, Matthew Maslanka ultimately finished his late father’s work and has been an active participant throughout the U Wind Ensemble’s performance process as they’ve prepared to debut Maslanka’s final gift of music.

The performance is conducted by the U’s director of bands, Professor Scott Hagen. Familiar with the reflective undertones of Maslanka’s music, Hagen said, “All of his music requires a level of emotional investment and the musicians who play his music become better musicians as a result of it.”

“Symphony No. 10” indeed features a wide array of emotions from pain and tragedy to peace and reconciliation. The soon-to-debut piece is already creating a presence in the music world as international and local attention for Maslanka’s final work is occurring, arguably making this one of the most historic concerts to have occurred on campus.

Additionally, this work will be recorded and released as an album in November of this year. This will be the second album of Maslanka’s music recorded by the U of U Wind Ensemble.

A pre-concert lecture will accompany the performance beginning at 6:45 p.m. by Maslanka’s son, Matthew. The performance will then begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Libby Gardner Hall.

U students can enjoy free admission, per Arts Pass benefits associated with a Ucard. General admission is $12.50 and faculty/staff/seniors and other students are $6.50.
