Although Salt Lake (and Utah in general) is known for its snow, there’s much more to us than the “greatest snow on Earth.” Utah has vibrant art and music scenes, including many spectacular art galleries that even long-time residents are unaware of. Many of these galleries are hole-in-the-wall type places and are easily looked over. Here are some we love:

Alpine Art

This gallery is home to a wide range of local, regional and international artists with a lot to share. Alpine Art is also known for framing and its interior design resources. It’s located at 430 East South Temple.

Hope Gallery

Located at 151 South Main Street, this gallery is home to photographs. Currently, they are presenting a showcase which captures the British Isles. With a focus on the stone structures, such as the ancient castles which are on the island, this exhibition is one of many reasons to check out this gallery.

Southam Gallery

On 152 South and Main Street, you can find this wonderful little gallery run by a fantastic mother and daughter duo. It’s known for its work which specializes in American landscape. It even has Robert S. Olpin’s (a previous dean at the University of Utah College of Fine Arts) approval.

Urban Arts Gallery

This gallery on 137 South Rio Grande Street is a must because it is currently hosting an exhibit of artwork from Utah-based creators called “Those Who Can’t.” The pieces in this exhibit are created by local art educators who are hoping to raise interest in arts education. This show is described as one which “will showcase Utah Art Educators’ aesthetic skills and provide commentary on the teacher shortage in Utah.”

Walker Building Gallery

This gallery is where the exhibition “Remembered Light” is being shown. This exhibition, sponsored by the Salt Lake Interfaith Roundtable and District of Rotary International, features broken fragments from World War II, which were turned into art. This remarkable exhibition uniquely portrays the devastation of WWII. This gallery is located on 175 South Main Street.

UMFA

If you haven’t had a chance to check out our own gallery on campus, you’re missing out. Right now, it’s hosting several different ongoing exhibitions: Arts of Africa, American and Regional Art, Chinese Art, European Art, Ancient Mediterranean Art, Ancient Mesoamerican Art, Modern and Contemporary Art, Arts of the Pacific and South Asian Art. You can take your very own trip around the world through all of the exhibits. UMFA partakes in celebrating awards season by having a highlight wall. This year, they have two portraits of screen legends. Plus admission is free for U students, faculty and staff with a valid UID.

Most of the galleries listed above are close by each other. If you want to learn more about a specific gallery and the exhibitions or events it has going on, click on its name and you’ll be redirected to their site. If we’ve missed any of your favorite galleries, make sure to comment and tell us about them. Happy gallery hopping!
