Letter to the Editor

By Don MacAngus

Editor:

To the chalk-wielding idiot who says that a military response to the recent terrorism would, in itself, be a form of terrorism, let me just say, get out a shovel! What an absolute pant load!

First of all, while there is much debate about this, most people would agree that there is such a thing as a just war. At the very least, I think we can agree that a just war would take place only if a country’s citizens, freedoms and property were under direct attack.

Pearl Harbor was at least an attack by military forces against other military forces. But this attack was against civilians ?innocent men, women and children. They were noncombatants.

I also want to say that this resurgence of the “America?Love It or Leave It” mentality is wrong-minded.

I can understand the sentiment, but keep in mind that unity of effort is not the same thing as unity of thought. We have to remember that one of our freedoms is the right to free speech and thought, and that means people who do not agree with us have the right to express an opinion.

I will say, however, that while it is easy to forgive someone for having an opinion or for being uninformed, it is very difficult to forgive someone for being uninformed and for being a loud mouth at the same time!

Just remember that there is no law in this country against being an idiot. And that’s a good thing, because if there were, we’d probably all be locked up by now.
