Student group puts Union in chains

University Not In Our Name (UNION)-a student activist group-is holding a demonstration in the Union to raise awareness of those who have died in, and in the aftermath of, the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

A chain made of 17,000 black construction paper links is hanging in the south wing of the Union.

“[We want to] increase awareness, to educate people,” said Cory Bushman, a member of the group.

Bushman said that she’s not expecting any particular reaction from the student body.

“Everyone will react differently to it,” she said.

The links represent the victims of Sept. 11 as well as Canadian, American, and British soldiers and Iraqi citizens who have died as a result.

“We wanted to include the Iraqi soldiers as well,” but there are no definite counts on how many have died, Bushman said.

On Wednesday, Nov. 5, UNION is hosting a teach-in, presented by the Wheels of Justice tour.

Wheels of Justice will show a nonviolent direct action demonstration in the Union, Room 172, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
