Letter to the Editor: Teachers allowed tuition exemption

Editor:

In response to N. Eric Heiselt’s April 5 letter to the editor (“It’s not easy to further educators’ education”), I would like it to be known that the U does honor Utah’s HB 211.

This law allows, under certain specified conditions, a tuition exemption for teachers seeking to satisfy the professional development requirements for educator relicensure. Guidelines explaining the conditions and qualifications for participation in this program as well, as the application form for tuition exemption, are available in the Registrar’s Office. Heiselt asked how many faculty members in the College of Education had previously taught or worked in the public schools. The answer is approximately 80 percent. Of the current full-time faculty in the two teacher education departments (Special Education and Teaching and Learning), only two have not previously served as a teacher, school psychologist or speech-language pathologist in the public schools.
