Those who persistently use eye drops containing preservatives to treat irritation might actually be exacerbating the situation.
According to Optometrist Douglas Smith, excessive use of eye drops can constrict the eye’s blood vessels and tear-creating mechanism. As a result, the eye becomes more red and dry, which leads to a need for more medication.
“I urge patients to avoid chronic use of drops that are for getting redness out,” said Michael Dorius, an optometrist at Hurricane Valley Eye Care. “They take the redness out and make the eyes feel a lot better, but that may just be covering the symptoms of the true problem.”
Smith said that those who frequently need to use eye drops should contact a doctor to gain control of the problem. Optometrists can prescribe an eye drop that is safe and satisfies the specific need.
To be safe, people can use a preservative-free drop as often as every 15 minutes, according to Smith.
