T he excuse, “I’ve been sooobusy” is the most arrogant, disrespectful, spineless thingto say when asked why someoneelse has not heard from you.Every time a friend leaves mehanging by not returning a phonecall or e-mail, I hear, “I’m so sorry,I’ve just been super busy!”I want to respond, “Of course! I’vejust been on vacation all semesterwhile taking 22 credits and writingfor the paper-my bad!”Getting back to people is a matterof common decency. What is “busy?” I’m always busy, but I know how to return phonecalls and e-mails promptly. It’s justcommon decency. It seems like a trend one growsinto. In high school you can’t reallyuse it because you see your friendsevery day. In college, however, everyone catches the “busy” bug. Iwent through a phase where I wasrude and pulled the busy excuse allthe time. Then I woke up and realized, whatis “busy?” Everyone’s busy. WhenI’m busy, I can still return calls ande-mails. “Busy” is a spineless way ofsaying, “I don’t care about you.”I stopped saying it to the peopleI care about because I should neverbe too busy to see or talk to a friend. So if you say “I’ll call you tomorrow,”call tomorrow. If someonee-mails you and you know he or sheis waiting for a response, write backin a reasonable amount of [email protected]
