Utes-At-A-Glance

BaseballPreview:Utah @ Southern UtahWhile the U baseball team(3-7) got off to a slow start,Southern Utah came out ofthe gates fast winning sixof its first seven games. TheUtes got back on track witha win against UCLA and twowins against Loyola Marymount,but the Thunderbirdslost three games in arow and are looking to getback on the winning track.The two teams meet todayin Cedar City to compete ina doubleheader.Wichita swept SouthernUtah over the weekend, butthe Thunderbirds only lostby a combined seven runs.Southern Utah has a potentlineup with a variety ofgood hitters.Senior right fielder AaronNelson leads the team witha .455 batting average, whileleft fielder Justin Sotelosupplies the power with histeam-leading two homeruns.Jason Ruiz has capitalizedat the plate with runners inscoring position.He has a team-leading 11RBIs.Although both teams haveplanned starting rotations forthis weekend’s series, the doubleheaderin the middle of the weekcould throw a wrench into thetwo teams’ rotations. The Thunderbirdshave two good pitchersin lefty Tyson Olson and rightyDusty Nielsen. The Utes couldcounter with Jason Price, butthey may decide to let him restafter he pitched game one of theweekend series.Men’s TennisThe U men’s tennis team isstill undefeated. After a toughmatch this weekend, the Utesbarely pulled ahead and defeatedNo. 69 Colorado.The Utes’ No. 1 singles player,Tomasz Gryzb, lost, but the nextthree Ute competitors, ZachGranger, Miron Mann and N ickCoutts, won their singles matches.With each team winning threesingles matches, it came down tothe doubles matches.After two Ute doubles teamswon by a score of 8-5, the Utessealed the victory and are now 8-0 on the season.The Utes will now head toBoise to compete in two matchesover the weekend against Pennsylvaniaand Boise State.Women’s TennisThe Utes competed in threematches over the weekend andonly came away with one win inKansas.Utah lost to Kansas State onFriday, 6-1, lost to Nebraska 6-1,but beat Kansas 5-2.Against Kansas, the Utes dominatedin singles play. By winningfive of the six matches, the Utesdidn’t even need a doubles pointto win the match.Liz Ferris dominated ChristineSkoda at the No. 1 singles position6-2, 6-2.Cheyenne Reveche and JenWencel both won in three setmatches.Utah will now head south toface BYU Friday in Provo at 4p.m.Women’s HoopsUte point guard Shona Thorburnwas named Mountain WestPlayer of the week, winning theaward for the third time in hercareer.Thorburn had big games in theU’s wins over BYU and ColoradoState.Against BYU, the junior had24 points, four assists and fivesteals. She tallied 20 points andnine assists in the win over CSU.
