Editors,I would like to comment about the editorial response in the March 11th Chronicle.(The Chronicle’s View: Endorsing a political party is perfectly ethical) It is completely ethical and appropriate for an Editorial Board to endorse a Candiate. However I am concerned about the argument the board makes to justify its actions. The board says: “Newspapers are in theunique position of being moreinformed than public at large. Assuch, disseminating informationis only a portion of their purpose. They also serve to analyze, comment on, criticize or endorsethe issues they report.” I disagree with the notion that the newspaper has some sort of mandate beyond providing information to its readers. The newspapers main responsibility should be to provide the information to the readers and allow the reader to “analyze, comment on, critisize or endorse” based on the information that the newspaper provides. If the the editorial board wishes to express an opinion or endorsment it should be reserved to the Opinion/Editorial section of the news paper and not presented as fact or anything other then what it is, the opionion of the editors if the newspaper.
