U Hospital and Clinics name interim associate vice president

U Hospitals and Clinics CEO Richard A. Fullmer was named the interim associate vice president for clinical services after leading the U Hospitals and Clinics for six years.

The U Hospitals and Clinics chief financial officer, Gordon Crabtree, will now serve as interim CEO.

Fullmer has been at the U since 1976. He has been associate executive director and chief financial officer of the University of Utah Community Clinics and the U Medical Group.

U Stroke Center wins award

The U’s Stroke Center recently won the American Stroke Association’s “Get With the Guidelines Stroke Initial Performance Award” for their achievements in commitment to higher standards for stroke care.

The award was only given to health care centers that complied with all requirements of the “Get With the Guidelines” program, and an 85 percent level of compliance was needed for the award.

Elaine Skalabrin, medical director of the stroke center, helped lead the efforts during the 90-day evaluation period.

U opens adolescent clinics in Salt Lake City

Two new U adolescent clinics opened in the Madsen Health Center and the Utah Diabetes Center this month.

Nicole Mihalopoulos, assistant professor of pediatrics, is now accepting patients at the Adolescent Preventive Cardiology Clinic as part of the Center of Excellence in Women’s Health Demonstration Project and at the Consultative Adolescent Medicine Clinic at the Utah Diabetes Center.

Mihalopoulos will provide adolescent services to men and women 12 to 20 years of age for issues including weight management, sexual and reproductive health and psychosocial and behavioral issues.

U Primary Care Research Center names scholars

Leslie Cooper, assistant professor of family and preventative medicine, and Nicole Mihalopoulos, assistant professor of pediatrics, were named this year’s Primary Care Research scholars.

The scholar positions will allow Cooper and Mihalopoulos to expand and publish their previous and current research and work with a series of mentors and fellow researchers to further implement pilot research.

U names nursing chief

Margaret Pearce, previous interim chief nursing officer, was named chief of nursing for U Hospitals and Clinics.

Pearce was previously a coach with the Studer Group, a consulting organization working with U Hospitals and Clinics leaders.
