U poets read at Lunch Bunch

By Christian Poole

Three student poets from the U read their work and the work of other writers at the Lunch Bunch concert series at the Gallivan Center last Thursday.

The poets, Catherine Ashton, Jesse Peterson and Andy Thompson, all seniors in English, presented some of the latest work published in Enormous Rooms, the U undergraduate literary journal.

Ashton, editor of Enormous Rooms, said that the journal wants to get the word out about the U’s undergraduate writers.

“Other journals are so focused on grad students or ‘real’ authors that it’s difficult for younger writers to be heard,” she said. “We want to find the writers within the U and find out what U students are doing.”

The poets took turns reading both poetry and short fiction.

“It was fun once some of the people started to pay attention,” said Ashton.

Enormous Rooms was read at Lunch Bunch, a free concert series, rather than on campus to connect with the community, said Ashton.

“Part of our idea for this journal is to include the community at large-not just the U.”

Enormous Rooms’ Jesse Peterson reads his poetry June 29 at the Gallivan Center. The Gallivan Center is hosting the Lunch Bunch Concert Series, which features different performances every weekday at noon until September 22.
