Construction on the John E. and Marva M. Warnock Engineering Building, just north of the Olpin Union, began in April 2005 and is scheduled for completion Dec. 4, 2006.
One of the biggest improvements, located at the core of the building’s 100,000 square feet, will be the Michael O. Leavitt Student Learning Center. The center will include computer-based classrooms and teaching labs, a caf and quiet study areas. It will also be home to the Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute (SCII).
“We are looking forward to the move. Space is always a crunch,” said Raelynn Potts, developmental officer for SCII. “It’s nice to be able to have a place to grow into.”
The building will provide more power to the institute’s supercomputers and a larger space to demonstrate new software, Potts said
The estimated cost for this project is $28 million, with $15 million coming from state funds and $13 million from private contributors.
Among the private funds contributed, John and Marva Warnock donated $6 million toward the construction of the building. John Warnock co-founded Adobe Systems, Inc., in 1982 and currently serves as the company’s co-chairman of the board. Both the building’s namesakes are U alumni.
The building’s dedication will be Dec. 15, and SCII plans to be completely moved in approximately one month later.
