Modern classics

Paul Taylor Dance Company returns to the U this Saturday, offering audiences the chance to experience a sample of the work that secured the New York-based company a name in the modern dance world.

While the members of PTDC will be appearing on the same stage in Salt Lake City as they did two years ago, this visit brings with it a look at choreographer Paul Taylor’s earlier work with the company. On the evening’s bill are the dances “Book of Beasts,” originally performed in 1971, “Airs” (1978) and “Syzygy” (1987).

These pieces, from the company’s older repertoire, are well-known, cornerstone works, said Sheri Jardine, public relations associate at Kingsbury Hall.

The dances are “classical-not in the sense of classical ballet-but in that this is who Paul Taylor is,” Jardine said. “These are (the company’s) signature pieces.”

PTDC has performed in more than 500 cities in 62 countries, and after a recent tour in celebration of the its 50th anniversary, PTDC will perform at Kingsbury Hall on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the general public are $24.50, $32.50 and $39.50. ASUU-sponsored student discount tickets are $14.50, $22.00, and $28.00. Call 581-7100 or visit www.kingtix.com for tickets or more information.
