ASUU position changes continue in new semester

By Rochelle McConkie

With a new semester underway and student government elections beginning next week, several changes are taking place in the student government.

Associated Students of the University of Utah Spokesman Cameron Beech resigned in December to run for student body president. Beech announced that his running mate will be Ryan Carrier.

Since Beech’s resignation, Jeff Adams has taken over as ASUU executive assistant and spokesman. Adams worked on ASUU campaigns and served last year as an associate director under former service director and current Student Body President Jake Kirkham.

Basim Motiwala, former chairman of the Campus Relations Board, also resigned in December to run for student body president. His replacement will be announced Friday, and transitioning will begin next week. Motiwala announced that his vice-presidential candidate will be Spencer Pearson, a former ASUU Assembly representative from the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.

ASUU Senate Chairwoman Shadie Ghaibi has been replaced by College of Science Senator Maryam Safaee. Safaee was elected by the Senate in late November.

“The Senate chooses their leadership, but we are happy about their decision,” Kirkham said.

Ghaibi left her position to serve as senior class president after Mindy Chidester resigned at the end of Fall Semester to serve a mission.

“I have been working with Maryam throughout several transitions; we worked together on several Senate committees,” Ghaibi said. “As senior class president, I’ve been working to get a board going, replacing several positions on the council.”

Katie and Griffin Jardine have replaced Lissy and Dan Black as leaders of the Non-Traditional Student Board. The Jardines served as associate directors to the Blacks and have been in training for several months.
