On track

By Kim Peterson

The U track and field team hosted its first and only home meet of the season Saturday at East High School’s Tally Stevens Track. The Utes had a good showing in the field, winning the women’s long jump, pole vault, triple jump and discus throw.

Susan Atwater cleared 3.80 meters (12-4.6 feet) on the pole vault, winning the event. Haley McAllister took first in the long jump, beating the closest competitor by .29 meters. Ashley Patterson beat her closest competitors in the triple jump by .34 meters, and Sarah Cardinal inched out teammate Becky Riddle to win the discus by .8 meters.

On the track, Utah freshman Liza Whitehead dominated the 100-meter dash, winning by just under four-fifths of a second. Senior Jennifer Cutrer won another 100-meter race for the Utes, slipping past Weber State’s Michaela Hagget by two-hundredths of a second in the hurdles.

Utah also won the 800-meter run, the 400-meter hurdles and the 3000-meter run to finish off this year’s Utah Spring Twilight meet. The meet was a non-scoring meet, but still a strong start for the Utah track team.

The Utes head to Iowa on Thursday to compete in the Drake Relays.
