With pieces ranging from “West Side Story” excerpts to Mozart overtures, Libby Gardner Concert Hall will present the University Symphony Valentine’s Concert tonight.
The University Symphony, a group of student performers, will start the concert at 7:30 p.m. The concert will highlight three graduate-level members of the School of Music who will conduct the show: Tonya Fullmer, Tyler Kidd and Robert Bott. Robert Baldwin, orchestra director at the U’s School of Music, said the three might just be “the real features of the program.”
As a first-year graduate student studying instrumental conducting, Bott, who will be conducting his first symphony, said the concert should appeal to a lot of people.
“It’s really exciting to hear different kinds of pieces coming together under one theme,” Bott said. “‘West Side Story’ is very different from Mozart’s work, but both of them fit the love theme really well.”
Baldwin said he has “included something for everyone,” so long as concert goers come in knowing that “not surprisingly, all the songs have something to do with love.”
