Students honor favorite professors

By Rochelle McConkie

Current and former students of professors who will be honored in the Student Choice Teaching Awards are invited to attend a reception Wednesday in the Alumni House.

Students and faculty members will pay tribute to professors Mark Matheson (English), Scott Black (English), Timothy Edgar (Geography), Richard Sesek (Mechanical Engineering), Yoko Azuma (Languages and Literature) and Christopher Whytock (College of Law).

Students nominated 16 professors for the awards. A group consisting of members of the Associated Students of the University of Utah Academic Affairs Board, student government leaders and other students selected the six winning professors based on their knowledge, availability after class, lecture setups, research and effects they have on students on an individual basis.

ASUU Academic Affairs Board Director Katie Miller said she hopes as many students as possible will come and support their professors at the reception.

“It’s important for us to honor professors for teaching,” Miller said. “At a research university, that kind of gets pushed to the side.”

The reception will begin at 3 p.m., and the program will begin at 3:15 p.m. U President Michael Young will speak, and the students who nominated their professors will present the awards.
