Briefs: U women’s tennis to compete in nationals today

Last month, the season came to a closer for the U women’s tennis team. That is, for everyone not named Elizabeth Ferris and Emily Kwok.

The two combine to make up the No. 25 ranked doubles team in the country and that partnership will represent the U in the NCAA Doubles Championships today through May 26 in Tulsa, Okla.

Ferris and Kwok, who are 19-4 as a pair in 2008, beat 18th-ranked Anna Sydorska and Macall Harkins of TCU in the MWC Championships in April.

Ferris and Kwok will be paired against Alex Haney and Melissa Koning of Auburn. Haney and Koning are ranked No. 14 in the country.

“It is an honor for Liz and Emily to make the NCAA in doubles. They have a chance to beat any opponent at the tournament. I feel they are playing great tennis and they should go into the tournament with a lot of confidence,” said head coach Mat Iandolo.

On a different note, Iandolo’s assistant, Ruthann Allen, was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Central Region Assistant of the Year. Allen helped Iandolo lead the U women to a 15-8 record (5-3 MWC) in his first year as head coach.
