Women’s tennis finishes strong over weekend

By Quinn Wilcox

The women’s tennis team stumbled out of the block at the Jack Taylor Invitational but closed strong this weekend in Boise, Idaho. This past week’s tournament featured the Utes, along with New Mexico, Boise State, and Washington State, who ranks in the top 40 this year. In the three day tournament, the Utes weren’t able to record a victory in singles play on the first day, but days two and three held much more success. Day two was arguably the most impressive day for the team, as the Utes posted four victories in singles play against Washington State. Anastasia Putilina, Karine Bourdages, Andrea Maughan, and Lisa Johnson were the players who notched day-two victories. Maughan, Bourdages, and Johnson also finished out the tournament strong for Utah with day-three victories against New Mexico. Julie Tukuafu was the final player for the Utes to win a match in the tournament.

Doubles play proved to be much more consistent for Utah. The Utes were able to notch victories on all three days. The tandem of Anastasia Putilina and Erin Monson proved to be too much for the rest of the field. They went undefeated the entire tournament, posting a 3-0 record, including an 8-3 stomping against Washington State on the final day. Putilina and Monson were also able to avenge their loss in the finals of the BYU Invitational on Saturday. They beat Boise State’s pair of Lauren Megale and Klaudia Wlodarczyk, 8-6. Lexi Provancha and Andrea Maughan was the other doubles team that was able to collect a victory for the Utes, beating Washington State 8-6 on Sunday.

Utah’s women’s tennis team won’t take the court again until the ITA Central Region Championships on October 18th. It will be the first tournament it will play this year that takes place in Salt Lake City, at the Eccles Tennis Center.
