U alumna goes baroque

By Julie Abubo, Staff Writer

Think Dead Meadow or Iron & Wine but ancient: The Utopia Early Music classical chamber ensemble will be performing “The Flawed Pearl: Music of the English and Italian Baroque” on Sept. 11, 8 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church (261 S. 900 East) and Sept. 13, 5 p.m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral (231 E. 100 South) in Salt Lake City.

Flawed Pearl refers to the merging of the Italian and English music cultures, forming what critics dubbed “baroque.”

Those weary of classical music can relax a little: Emily Nelson, a U alumna, soprano and ensemble founder, along with co-founder Christopher LeCluyse, tenor, felt it important to make the centuries-old genre entertaining for modern audiences.

Performances include historically informed pieces composed before the mid-1700s. The group, comprised of both local and out-of-state performers, promises a unique collaboratory experience. Guest performances will include Miyo Aoki (recorder), Jonathan Oddie (harpsichord) and Polly Gibson (viola da gama).

Admission is free with a suggested donation of $10 for students, $15 for general admission, and $12 for seniors. This show will serve as a respectful nod to the great composers of the past as well as to curious and die-hard fans of the genre today.
