Construction Update

By Michael McFall, News Editor

Library closing
Construction crews will be closing the Eccles Health Sciences Library from mid-December through July 2010 to renovate its ceiling. Crews will be removing asbestos, updating the fire suppression systems, installing more energy-efficient lighting and upgrading the library’s wireless Internet network. Since EHSL’s books and journals are being moved to the lower floors strictly for staff use, the library staff will remain available to serve students.

Not in business yet
The Business Loop will stay closed until at least mid-December while construction crews install chilled water lines along the north side of the road. U Campus Facilities originally said the road could be opened by this week, but wet weather delayed the Utah Science Technology and Research Initiative sewer and chilled water line project, forcing work on the road to continue longer than planned. The road is expected to reopen by the end of the year, said project manager Tom Christensen. Buses and U shuttles will continue taking the detour on South Campus Drive for now.

Baliff Road closure
Baliff Road, the entrance to the parking lot at the Tanner Dance Building, will be closed until the end of January. The construction crew is building a utilities tunnel in the area. Drivers trying to park in the lots west of the dance building should use Austin Road.

Genetic road narrowing
Construction crews narrowed the traffic on the east side of the Eccles Institute of Human Genetics Building at 2030 East down to one lane. It won’t reopen until Jan. 9.
