U-Block Radio: A Black History Month Tribute

Alicia is using fear tactics, trying to frighten readers by portraying peaceful protesters as aggressors. Look at the language she uses to speak about pacifists such as myself: militant, bully, hatred, threat, terrorist tactics.

On Friday February 21, 2014 Ole Ute Radio’s Sascha Blume and the University of Utah’s Dr. Bryan Hotchkins joined radio host and U student Keith McDonald in the spirit of Carter G. Woodson on the U-Block show. The program, which took place in the A. Ray Olpin Student Union on the fourth floor, was dedicated to the African American experience in America.

The topics discussed included but were not limited to: the Stand Your Ground Law in Florida, Stop and Frisk initiative in New York, the US judicial system, the n-word and popular culture. Sascha and Keith presented Dr. Hotchkins with serious issues about race and policy as well as more light heart inquiries about good depictions of African Americans in movies and TV shows.

This was the second time Dr. Bryan Keith Hotchkins, a graduate teaching assistant in the educational leadership & policy department, has been a guest on the U-Block show. In addition to playing Hip-Hop, R&B and Soul music the show has features occasional interviews and a monthly social justice focus. Visit www.kuteradio.org to stream the U-Block show live from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. every Friday.

Keith McDonald is a student at the University of Utah and the recipient of the Pastor France Davis scholarship. He is a veteran and a native of Chicago, Illinois.
