More than 5,000 students showed up at this year’s first Crimson Nights.
At 9 p.m., freshmen arrived, unaware of what chaos would ensue as the night continued on. By 10 p.m., a shuttle full of intoxicated students was stopped at the door, shocked when they were denied entry. When 10:30 p.m. rolled around, a female student was escorted out of the Union. Her yelling voice echoed out of the building. Just past 11 p.m., the line stretched outside. Cops continued to guard the doors of the Union until 2 a.m.
The theme “Out of This World” was seen at Friday’s Crimson Nights in the music and the clothes, with some students dressed in rave attire. Once the clock struck midnight, everyone was on the dance floor.
Christopher Watson, a freshman in civil engineering, danced early in the evening to White Panda, the DJ for the event.
“I had a good time,” Watson said as he stood in line for an airbrush tattoo. He had his mind set on getting a Batman stencil.
The back of the Union was packed with students chanting along to the music. Scott Hamilton, an undeclared sophomore, said the dance was “too sweaty,” but he would still rate Crimson Nights a seven or eight out of 10.
Stephany Cortez, a freshman in political science, said the night was “cool, for lack of a better word.” Cortez and her friend said they were drained from a night of dancing.
“It was an amazing experience,” she said.
Mary Neville, a senior in math and executive director of UPC, said this Crimson Nights was the biggest she had seen. In the past, Neville said Crimson Nights has been repetitive, so this year, UPC put a big effort into creating a unique night for students.
Gavin Farr, a senior in exercise science, said this was one of his favorite Crimson Nights out of the four he’s been to. He said he learned some new dance moves while dancing to White Panda and enjoyed the food provided by UPC. Farr also spent some time playing on an inflatable wrecking ball, in the spirit of Miley Cyrus.
Another activity at Crimson Nights was “cosmic dodgeball.” This year’s event was sponsored by the UMFA, Utah National Guard and GRIFOLS.
