As 2015 crashes in and new movies are already premiering, IMDb has calculated the top-grossing movies of 2014. Here are the top five:

The number five top-grossing movie of 2014 was the newest installment in the “Transformers” series, “Transformers: Age of Extinction.” Saying goodbye to Shia LaBeouf as the lead role, director Michael Bay created yet another action-packed movie filled with top-notch actors and incredible special effects. Actor Mark Wahlberg stepped up to take the lead role in the sci-fi series. After being banished by humans, Optimus Prime and the other Autobots go into hiding to escape being secretly taken apart and eliminated by the government. Little did he know, Optimus Prime was about to be discovered by a struggling father, Wahlberg, and his daughter, Nicola Peltz. Now, Optimus Prime and the other Autobots must put their trust once again in human beings to help save the earth and the Autobot race from Lockdown, an intergalactic bounty hunter.

Digging back into the toy trunk, “The Lego Movie” built its way into the number four spot. This animated film brought back many childhood memories as it created an enjoyable atmosphere for both children and adults. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, “The Lego Movie” stars the voices of many recognized actors, including Chris Pratt, Will Arnett, Elizabeth Banks and Will Ferrell. Pratt voiced the lead role of Emmet, an ordinary construction worker caught in a Lego world full of average Lego people all doing the same thing every day. When Emmet is told he is special, he searches for a way to defeat the malevolent Lord Business, meeting new friends along the way. This movie shares a heart-warming message, along with some catchy tunes.

As Marvel continues to produce incredibly popular superhero movies, the next chapter of the “Captain America” enterprise did not fail to uphold reputation. Directors Anthony and Joe Russo welcomed back Chris Evans on another Captain America adventure in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” the third top-grossing film of 2014. Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson, reprising their roles as Black Widow and Nick Fury, join forces with Captain America (Evans) to outwit the immoral Alexander Pierce, played by Robert Redford, and take down the mysterious yet familiar Winter Soldier, played by Sebastian Stan. This film ranks high with the help of the much-adored Marvel company and the interesting concept of whether the world would be better with just those select people with the “right” qualities.

The first part of the final chapter of “The Hunger Games” series got the second spot with “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1.” Francis Lawrence came back to direct the concluding story of Katniss Everdeen and her fight against the Capitol. Many award-winning celebrities, including Jennifer Lawrence, Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Julianne Moore, helped make this movie a success. Having escaped the last Hunger Games and on the verge of a mental breakdown, Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence), with the help of old and new friends, fights to take down the Capitol in the hopes of finding her co-victor, Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutchinson). The film spends the majority of the time capturing the devastating emotions of battling a war while being watched and filmed for all to see. The tragic death of Philip Seymour Hoffman was an unexpected development during filming, but Hoffman did not disappoint as ex-gamemaker, Plutarch Heavensbee. With Mockingjay Part 1 dedicated to his memory, Hoffman will be remembered for his excellent work.

Used to being on his own, known thief Peter Quill (Pratt), otherwise known as Star-Lord, runs into an unlikely group of criminals on his way to discovering that there is more to the world than meets the eye. The group of five intergalactic misfits learn to work together to defeat the evil villain, Ronan the Accuser, from taking over the world with his impenetrable power. James Gunn directed a genuinely entertaining action movie that will soon find its way on to everybody’s movie shelf.

While there are many popular titles circulating for the new year, they definitely have their work cut out for them in keeping up with the movies of 2014.
