Michael Lewis, author of The Blind Side, to Speak in Salt Lake City

Do you want to meet the man behind the stories of famous books and blockbusters? Thanks to the Hinckley Institute of Politics, you finally can.

On Sept. 24, Michael Lewis will be speaking at Abravanel Hall.

Lewis is the author of The Blind Side and Moneyball, both of which were produced into Academy Award-nominated films. Most recently, Lewis has written accounts on global financial crisis such, as Flash Boys, Boomerang and The Big Short, the last of which is currently being made into a film.

A graduate of Princeton and the London School of Economics, Lewis’s experience in the stock market influenced his book Liar’s Poker. After resigning as a bond salesman, he became a financial journalist and was featured in Bloomberg News, Vanity Fair, The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, Gourmet, Slate, Sports Illustrated, Foreign Affairs, and Poetry Magazine. Lewis has narrated ABC-TV’s “Nightline,” produced a documentary for the BBC and recorded stories for “This American Life.”

A conversation with Michael Lewis will take place part of the Sam Rich Lecture Series. The event is named after graduate and former professor, S. Grover “Sam” Rich Jr. After his death in 2009, a fund was organized to arrange speaking engagements. Molly Wheeler, the Hinckley’s administrative program coordinator, said Lewis was invited because it’s an opportunity for students to learn from “one of the best in the business.”

Gina Eastes, a sophomore in political science and international studies, believes students should be interested in what Lewis has to say.

“He’s been influential as a writer,” Eastes said. “People care about what he says.”

Tickets are $5 and will be available through ASUU.
