Embrace Florals in Fall: How to Keep Your Wardrobe Vibrant in Cold Weather

Embrace+Florals+in+Fall%3A+How+to+Keep+Your+Wardrobe+Vibrant+in+Cold+Weather

If this college campus is any indication, autumn is that special time of year when the dingy swarm of sweats, plaids, hoodies and leggings creep out of hiding and into the public eye. Thanks to the season’s distinctively cool weather, these dismally cozy layers can strike the perfect balance and warm their wearers without overheating. Not much can be said about their aesthetic appeal, however.

While it is true that every season sets its own sartorial limitations with its weather (survival in winter is impossible without a considerably warm coat, while the incessant beat of the summer sun eliminates any potential for decent layering), the effect their climates have on the more ornate aspects of an outfit isn’t as great. We’ve all heard exclamations defining the “rules” of each season. Phrases like “save bright colors for summer!” and “no whites after Labor Day!” are both irritatingly common, but, in the end, need to be taken with a grain of salt. White looks phenomenal in the winter snow, and with the right styling, electric greens, blues and yellows can be worn year-round. After all, rules are meant to be broken, aren’t they?

Fall is no exception to these arbitrary rules as flannels, corduroys, cable-knits and, in most cases, sweats take the stage, all with a dark cloud of gloom present in place of color. The confines of this fall aesthetic can be suffocating for stylishly expressive individuals, but when staying warm is the focus it can be hard to deviate from it. Pattern and color are vital for injecting life into your autumn look, and in most cases aren’t hard to come by. Most likely, you have three more seasons’ worth of clothes to choose from. With the right layering, weaving the lively visual interest of spring and summer can actually be quite simple and incredibly fun to wear.

While traditionally assigned to spring, floral patterns are some of my favorite to wear in the cooler months. The light, colorful feel of them can pull an outfit from the depths of the gloomy months and breathe fresh life into any outfit. However, fall florals can go drastically wrong when done incorrectly. Here are some tips to perfect the fall floral:

Stay away from Hawaiian shirts

For the most part, floral Hawaiian shirts are far too time- and place-specific to be any good in the cooler months. They look messy and, because of their casual nature, do not layer well at all.

Layer, layer, layer

The beautiful thing about fall is the freedom in layering it provides. By sticking a brighter floral pattern underneath an otherwise normal fall sweater you add visual interest to the outfit without calling for too much attention. Since only, like, five square inches of the shirt would show, you can pull out your most outlandish florals without any guilt.

Keep the colors dark and neutral

If you’re wearing the floral as the primary piece of an outfit and it isn’t layered with a sweater or sweatshirt, you have to keep the colors more subdued and neutral. Don’t get me wrong — I’m all for self-expression, and you already know I’m a huge fan of rule-breaking, but toning down the florals proves, in the end, you aren’t a nuisance to society by demanding the attention of all the innocent bystanders.
