On Wednesday, May 7, it was announced that the Utah Hockey Club would change its name and logo to be the Utah Mammoth. Over 850,000 votes were cast throughout four rounds of fan voting.
The Utah Mammoth, formerly known as the Utah Hockey Club, played their inaugural season through 2024-2025, making the move and rebrand from the Arizona Coyotes.
The team colors have stayed the same since the move to Utah: light blue and white. The new logo, however, shows a mammoth with its tusks up, what looks like Utah’s mountain range, an outline of the state of Utah and a tusk that represents the “U” in Utah.
The official chant is now “Tusks Up.” This phrase is expected to be the main slogan for the team moving forward. Utah chose the singular version of “Mammoth” and not “Mammoths” to signify that, as stated, “it symbolizes one team, all-in and all of Utah.” Utah will also unveil a new mascot in the upcoming months.
The Mammoth has a name that does tie nicely with Utah. The Columbian mammoth has Utah connections, which roamed around during the Ice Age. The skeleton was found many years later, which proves the connection between the two.
Cole Bagley from KSL Sports asked fans on X whether they were happy with the changes and asked through a survey to “grade” the rebrand. A whopping 86.3% selected an A grade, while 10.9% chose B out of over 4,000 votes. This states a general happiness with the Utah fanbase over the rebrand.
The Mammoth will wear jerseys that display the Mammoth logo in home games and the state’s name on away games. As stated by the team, the reason for the switch on away games is “to put a prominent focus on representing Utah when we’re away from the state.”
The Utah Mammoth has a busy offseason this summer. There are currently renovations in the Delta Center, allowing fans to be able to view the entire ice, which was an issue last season. They were also able to climb 10 spots in the NHL draft, now selecting as the fourth pick.
The Mammoth rebrand overall has been a success, and many fans are happy with the new logo and branding, while still keeping many aspects of the team the same as before.
