Why can’t everyone just get along?

By By Steven Warrick March 25, 2009

Repugnant as the people are who engage in such behavior, the best way to confront them is by criticizing their actions rather than attacking them personally. Such an approach is not only more diplomatic but is paradoxically more devastating because it is focused on the other party's least defensible point.

Being required to constantly change password is unsafe, annoying

By By Jeffrey Jenkins March 25, 2009

The frequent changing of passwords is irritating to students. Any change is tolerable when the effects of the requirement actually serve a purpose, but the effectiveness of switching passwords so often is questionable.

Bailout abuse shouldn’t come as a surprise

By By Spencer Merrick March 24, 2009

From GM to AIG, responsibility needs to be shifted back to the individual, not the vague entity as a whole. There are no individual consequences for the unethical practices we're seeing in these corporations. We've been far too trusting of executives who will do anything to turn a profit. We need to create bailout contracts with that in mind, and patch up the holes. Or better yet, we could stop bailouts altogether.

Money should fund students, not buildings

By By James Sewell March 24, 2009

Why aren't private donors stepping in to support students rather than the buildings that (will no longer) house them? Why is higher education driving economic development, when the past decade of economic development decadence failed to support higher education? Quid Pro No, I guess.

Liquor laws still need work

By By Kiyan Sharifian March 24, 2009

House Bill 347, which passed earlier this month and will eliminate compulsory private club memberships, is a good first step in this process. However, it cannot be counterbalanced with a bill that moves us two steps backward. H.B. 347 helps Utah look forward in the same way that SB 187 will serve to keep Utah looking into the past.

Reimherr welcomes student input

March 23, 2009

In response to Jeremy Thompson's article, ("Sustainability fee passes temporarily; ASUU must reconcile versions of bill," March 11), I would like to address a few issues.

Southern Utah should be freed of pests

By By Liz Carlston March 23, 2009

In Southern Utah, there are several pending lawsuits in response to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's approval of releasing a Russian beetle on a weed management expedition.

Campus should become a safe zone

By By Cameron Hodgkin March 23, 2009

Discrimination pervades many facets of the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning individuals on campus, making it difficult for many of them to feel safe and work effectively.

Gang database worth downside

By By Aaron Zundel March 23, 2009

All human cost considered, the new database promises to do more good for Utahns than harm, especially if the state further refines the system to somehow allow defense attorneys access on a case-by-case basis.

Animal rights activists are overpunished

By By Kiyan Sharifian March 12, 2009

Reservations on certain types of research and other social practices need to be taken in to account in the formulation of public policy. Because, as history has shown, the moral truths that Americans hold dear will drive political groups to call out all the louder to be heard.
