Less-than-stellar year for university funding

The Utah State Legislature allocated an "average" amount of funding for higher education this year, in spite of a budget surplus, experts said. That means more funding will probably be needed from students. "Higher education had a modest legislative session with regard to appropriations," said Kim Wirthlin, U vice president for government relations.

The character and acts of the prime minister of Israel, Ariel Sharon, have been controversial. He made some serious political and military mistakes, which may not be forgotten, especially by those who were affected by these decisions.

The U Publications Council announced Danyelle White, graduate student in creative writing/poetry, as the new editor in chief of The Daily Utah Chronicle for the 2006-2007 school year. White, who was named as the new editor on March 1, started at The Chronicle in the summer of 2002 as a part-time copy editor.

Money talk

U administrators will host a meeting discussing increases in tuition for the 2006-2007 school year on Thursday. Truth in Tuition will be held Thursday in the Panoramic East room in the Union at 2 p.m. The public, especially students, is invited to attend.

U Profile: From sand to snow

Lue Cee Rusiang Kotaro, a senior in psychology, is from a worldly family. Kotaro, whose friends call her "Rus," is from the South Pacific island of Palau. Her twin sister is studying medicine in Fiji, and her brother lives in Seattle. After spending one year at Palau Community College, Kotaro decided to come to the United States.

Counselors educate, help families dealing with cancer

A genetic counselor's job includes supporting research efforts, participating in community outreach programs and seeing patients on an individual basis to search for genetic links for cancers and other diseases between family members. Oftentimes, genetic counselors have to make the scientific information more accessible to cancer patients.

To protest or not to protest

Dayne Goodwin, U custodian, felt the need to mobilize in 2003 as he foresaw the United States' attack of Iraq. Goodwin, a lifelong activist, wanted the U community to take a larger part in anti-war efforts. In February of that year, he and a number of professors and graduate students created the Campus Coalition for Peace and Justice to organize and publicize anti-war events.
