Legislators question U’s $28 million surplus

State legislators are expressing concern over why the U and all other Utah universities are sitting on millions of surplus dollars. In the 2006 fiscal year, the U had almost $30 million left over in state-sponsored funds, causing lawmakers to question whether or not they are giving schools too much money.

Media hinders U.S. efforts

Editor: Matthew Piper really hit the nail on the head in his article "Gameboy media: We've reached a new level" (Dec. 1). In fact, I made the same comment, "The media's coverage is a self-fulfilling prophecy," just a couple of weeks ago in my political science class.

Rape is a problem for everyone

When a crime is targeted at only one gender 90 percent of the time it occurs and perpetrated by the other gender 99 percent of the time (according to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network), it illustrates a flaw in the way our society works. Rape is a terror that women have to be in constant consideration of.

Eric Weddle: All-American

The first of what promises to be a flood of postseason accolades for Eric Weddle was handed down yesterday--and it's a big one. The American Football Coaches Association named the versatile senior defensive back an All-American after a stellar regular season in which he picked off six passes and scored eight touchdowns.

Utes drop MWC final, lose seed in NCAA tournament

The No. 9 U volleyball team had won every regular season conference game this entire year, carried a 25-match winning streak and played for the Mountain West Conference tournament championship. But all of the Utes' accolades and accomplishments couldn't overcome a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Colorado State in the championship, as the U was not given a seed in the NCAA tournament.

After an abysmal defensive performance in the Runnin' Utes' home-opener against Southern Utah, U head coach Ray Giacoletti and his team went back to the drawing board last Saturday in hopes of curing their ills. "Our goal in practice right now is to get better defensively," Giacoletti said before practice on Tuesday.

U programmers win statewide competition

The competition for the title of "Utah's Best Programmer" ended in a stalemate last week with five U graduates among the winners. The award with not only came the coveted title from Berkeley Data Systems, Inc., but also a $10,000 prize for winners. Because all eight finalists came up with solutions that worked, it was decided that there was no clear winner.

Science Day helps recruit high-schoolers

More than 70 U students volunteered to help present the U's 18th annual Science Day for more than 700 high-school students on Saturday. "I went to Science Day as a high-school student last year and thought it was awesome, so I really wanted to help out this year," said Heidi Payne, an undeclared freshman volunteer.

ASUU appoints new elections registrar

Former ASUU Deputy Attorney General and Student Outreach Director Lorraine Evans has been appointed to serve as Elections Registrar for the 2006-2007 school year. Evans will be replacing Jeff Mathis, who served during the 2005-2006 term. A new elections registrar is chosen each year.
