Repeal the sales tax on textbooks

Right now, the Utah Legislature is considering a bill that, if passed, would repeal the sales tax on textbooks. While the sales tax on textbooks would only end up being about $60 a year for people who spend $400 per semester on their books, any break for students is a welcome one.

After the women finished a disappointing third and the men finished fourth in last year's Mountain West Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, the Utes will be looking for a better finish to their team schedule this time around. The Ute swimming and diving teams are at the Oklahoma City Community College Aquatic Center today for day one of the four-day competition that concludes Saturday.

Legislature increases number of nonresident tuition waiver scholarships

The State Legislature passed a bill Feb. 10 increasing the number of nonresident tuition waiver scholarships offered in the state's system of higher education. House Bill 66, proposed by Rep. Craig Buttars, R-Lewiston, would increase the number of students granted a partial or complete waiver of the nonresident portion of their tuition from 500 to 900 students per year.

Decorated string quartet to play at Kingsbury Hall

On Feb. 15, the St. Lawrence String Quartet will perform works by Mozart, Shostakovich and Schafer at Libby Gardner Concert Hall. The quartet has been astounding audiences and critics since its inception 16 years ago. In 1992, the quartet was named the winner of not only the Banff International String Quartet Competition but also the Young Concert Artists Auditions.

Jazz can’t draft, O’Connor needs to go

Editor: Kevin O'Connor joined the Utah Jazz in 1994 as player scout, later becoming the general manager and vice president of basketball operations in 1999. With O'Connor in charge, the Jazz have not had a single draft pick worth writing home about. No league leaders, no All-Stars, not even a starter-and only one player who is on the current roster.
