Alan Kay: notable U alumnus

Editor: There was a prominent oversight in your box ("Notable U Graduates in the Computer Industry," Jan. 25): Alan Kay, who earned a Master's of Science in 1968 and a doctorate in 1969, happens to be coming to campus next month to be honored Feb. 22 as a Founders Day Distinguished Alumnus.

The U has been naughty, and now we're being punished. The State Legislature has stopped the recreation center in its tracks by refusing the bond necessary to begin construction. This isn't a case of not having enough money in the state coffers. The rec center wouldn't have cost the state a dime-we simply needed to be loaned the money, which we would then pay back.

Students looking to run laps and lift weights may have to stick with the Field House and HPER building after the Utah State Legislature killed a bond request Thursday. In a 5 to 3 vote, the Capital Facilities and Administrative Services Appropriations Subcommittee denied the bonding necessary to build the state-of-the-art facility on campus.

New campaign rules create problems for potential candidates

As student government elections approach, several potential candidates are saying the new rules that restrict campaigning make recruiting students for their parties too difficult. According to the Associated Students of the University of Utah Redbook rules, candidates cannot e-mail, text message, call or approach students to get them involved in their party unless the student has expressed prior interest in the campaign or a party member already personally knows the student.

I visited with my 93-year-old grandfather over the break and was enlightened by him-not by his wisdom, but by his failure. I finally had a chance to read some of the book he has been working on for the past 50 years about how labor unions are ruining the country.
