Utah pistol team wins big at national championships

By Tony Pizza, Sports Editor

While most Utah students were relaxing during Spring Break, the Utah pistol team was busy winning national championships.

Last week, the U Naval ROTC Standard Pistol team won the national championship at Fort Benning, Ga. Coach Matt DeLong’s air pistol team nearly duplicated the feat, but finished second to perennial powerhouse Ohio State. Utah finished ahead of traditionally strong teams MIT and military academies Army and Navy.

As far as individual efforts are concerned, Linsday Daniels finished the intercollegiate tournament as a national champion in the women’s air pistol event. The senior double major in international studies and sociology also finished fourth in the sport pistol event. She finished up the week third in the women’s individual aggregate, the first Utah women to do so. She was the first shooter in team history to be named an All-American in women’s sport shooting.

Junior Brad Collins finished second in the open air pistol event, just 0.6 points behind the winner. He won All-American honors in the free, standard and air pistol events, becoming the second person in team history to win three All-American accolades in one year.
