Everything from helmets and gloves to the skis and boards themselves are gaining technology that heightens the ability of the user and creates a new cutting-edge experience. Exciting developments in smart winter gear and new technology are enhancing performance, safety and overall enjoyment in the gnarly world of winter sports. 

Geolocation

Snowboarders and skiers don’t agree on much, but one thing they can agree on is the game-changing role of smart accessories like helmets, goggles and gloves in elevating both safety and performance on the slopes.

Geolocation technology, most colloquially known for its use in navigation apps on smartphones, is now becoming a staple in snow accessories, as it allows the user to track their movements on the slopes. Equipped with GPS-enabled devices in their gear, snowboarders and skiers can stay in the loop with real-time updates on their location and speed.

Interactive maps connecting gear and smartphones can help skiers and snowboarders to stay on their intended path, avoid new obstacles and discover new areas within their skill level. And should emergencies or accidents arise, the precise geolocation data comes into play, allowing rescue teams to swiftly locate people in need.

Smart Skis

In a thrilling blend of time-honored craftsmanship and cutting-edge innovation, the world of skiing and snowboarding entered a new era with the creation of smart skis. Smart skis bring a game-changing tech upgrade to the snowy slopes, tackling the common issue of vibrations during high-speed and challenging terrain skiing. Smart skis integrate two types of sensors. Together, pyroelectric, or temperature, and piezoelectric, or pressure, sensors collect data about the surface the ski contacts. With an actuator control system, embedded ceramics work like magic, transforming those annoying vibrations into electric energy to dissipate them. The collected data can be stored and could be transformed into data about the run for any skiers following. 

These high-tech wonders perform impressively in all conditions, from hard-packed to soft snow, promising a smoother and more controlled ride for skiers of all levels. While they’re still largely in the testing phase, they’re sure to be a staple for skiers in the coming years, though they’ll have a hefty price tag.
