The University of Utah has a prestigious athletics history with a strong supporting fan base. Despite a down year for the football and men’s basketball teams, the Utes showed out when it came to athletic success in 2024.
Women’s Basketball
The U’s women’s basketball team went through much adversity in the 2024-25 season. Injuries, coaching changes and playing in a new conference didn’t create an easy environment for the players. Despite all of this, the Lady Runnin’ Utes battled.
After finishing the regular season with a 22-7 record, the Utes were an eight-seed in the NCAA tournament. While their tournament run didn’t last long, it was a successful first season as head coach for Gavin Petersen. All signs point to improvement in the 2025-26 season.
Golf
Men’s golf was arguably the most improved athletics program at the U this season. A record-setting 2024-25 campaign included four team titles, six individual crowns, the highest ranking in team history and a sixth NCAA Regionals appearance.
Golf is on the rise at the U under head coach Garrett Clegg. A solid returning roster for next season creates optimism for a rapidly rising team.
Gymnastics
One of the nation’s all-time great gymnastics programs competes in a packed-out Huntsman Center. The Red Rocks are the only NCAA women’s gymnastics team to have appeared in all 49 NCAA National Championships, and all five Final Fours since moving to the format in 2021.
With talent across the board year in and year out, Utah gymnastics is a powerhouse that is here to stay. Combining a top-tier recruiting class with an elite group of returning gymnasts, 2025 is gearing up to be special for a pristine program.
Skiing
It’s only right that the U would be atop the nation’s rankings in skiing. Home to the “Greatest snow on earth” and some of the best facilities in the world, Utah is as attractive a location as any for professional and collegiate skiers.
On March 8, 2025, the U clinched its 17th national championship in skiing. The fourth title in the last five years cements Utah’s run as one of the top dynasties in the sport’s existence.
2024 was a great year for Utah’s athletic programs. Excelling student-athletes are often a product of hard-working coaches, directors and support staff. As the U continues growing as an academic and athletic university, it will be intriguing to see what kind of accomplishments can be made moving forward.
