Sitting right in the center of Sugar House is the aptly named Sugar House Coffee. Having opened in 2002, Sugar House Coffee might seem small in size, but its impact on the local community cannot be understated. Inside its simple and charming exterior is a lovely atmosphere that’s hard to find anywhere else in Salt Lake City. With a wide menu of drinks and food, it’s a perfect place to go to any time of the day and for any reason as well. Not only that, but it welcomes anyone who comes in, meaning that no matter who you are, you’ll feel right at home.
And from Sugar House Coffee, it’s only a short walk to a myriad of other locations, one of which is the Best Friends Animal Society. While it’s not recommended to go in there with coffee and pastries, it is recommended to go in there and scout out the animals there in need of a home. Not to mention the Barnes and Noble right down the street as well as the short drive to Sugar House Park, either choice being a great way to spend the afternoon.
Sugar House Coffee is not only a place of hot drinks and quick snacks, but a place of community as well. It holds a variety of events such as an open night mic, a board game night and of course the bi-monthly Makers Market. The Makers Market is a chance for local businesses and local artists to come and sell their work, make some money and engage with the community.
Some of these local artists include Einai-objective, a local artist who works mainly with jewelry and A&C Souvenirs, who makes homemade candles that come in a variety of scents and flavors and Rockhoundgrim, who also specializes in jewelry by turning stones into necklaces. Even if you want to go out to window shop, there are sure to be a few pieces and artists present that will make you think otherwise. Plus, by showing up and supporting local artists, you let these passionate and talented people continue to work on their art. It’s truly special to see all of these people gathered and showing off their work. In fact, it’s inspiring to see it. Who knows, maybe by going you’ll be inspired to create something after getting home from the market.
The makers market is held every other Thursday of the month. So while it’s done for May, it will be back for June 12 and 26 from 4:30-8:00 p.m. With that in mind, spending an evening here, surrounded by local artists and others who also share an interest in local art, should prove to be a wonderful use of time. Even if you can’t attend it, make sure to stop by Sugar House Coffee for the variety of other events being held there, not to mention that it’s worth going just to take in the atmosphere.
